Re-Membering Your Body’s Magic: The Healing Power of Castor Oil Packing

My journey with castor oil packs began in a tender moment of loss. After an early pregnancy loss, my father, a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, gently applied a woolen flannel soaked in castor oil to my womb, layering it with a heat pack. As I rested, healing from the release of that pregnancy, I was acutely aware that my body was in a postpartum state, even without a live birth. The warmth and care of the pack stirred a gentle stimulation of my parasympathetic nervous system, as described by Edgar Cayce in Natural Cures. This profound experience inspired me to dive deeper into the seemingly miraculous properties of castor oil, a practice that now anchors my work with The Feminine Re.Membering.

Derived from the seeds of the castor plant, Ricinus communis, castor oil’s healing legacy stretches back to ancient Egypt, where it served medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Widely cultivated in India, Africa, and Brazil, it’s a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine, addressing ailments from arthritis to constipation to pain relief. Its potency lies in its high ricinoleic acid content, an omega-9 fatty acid that penetrates deeply into tissues. As Barbara Wren notes in Our Return to the Light, castor oil emits a white light containing all visible wavelengths, energizing cells to reduce stagnation and promote healing. This light-filled energy aligns with our body’s innate wisdom, inviting vitality and balance.

Castor oil packs are a versatile ritual, applied to various body parts depending on your healing needs. However, it’s recommended to begin with the liver for 3-7 consecutive days before targeting other areas, such as the womb or thyroid. The liver, our body’s detox hub, processes toxins, excess hormones (estrogen, progesterone), and metabolic waste accumulated from stress, diet, or environmental factors. Packing the liver first stimulates bile flow and boosts glutathione, a key antioxidant, clearing systemic stagnation. Without this step, targeting other areas could overwhelm the liver, slowing detox and reducing efficacy. By starting with the liver, you create a clear pathway for healing, aligning with your body’s physiologic rhythm.

Specific Conditions & Body Parts Castor Oil Packing Supports

Castor oil packing targets specific body parts to address a range of conditions, each benefiting from the oil’s anti-inflammatory, circulatory, and detoxifying properties. Below, explore how this practice supports your journey to heal, thrive, and flourish, whether nurturing fertility, postpartum recovery, or lifelong vitality.

Liver (Right Upper Abdomen)

  • Conditions: Hormonal imbalances (e.g., estrogen dominance, PMS), digestive issues (bloating, constipation), skin conditions (acne, rosacea), chronic fatigue, liver congestion.

  • Benefits: Enhances detoxification, clears excess hormones, and reduces systemic inflammation. Boosts bile flow and glutathione, supporting radiant skin, balanced hormones, and energy.

  • Why: The liver metabolizes toxins and hormones, making it the foundation for systemic health. Packing here primes the body for deeper healing, especially for fertility (hormonal balance) and postpartum recovery (metabolic reset).

Lower Abdomen (Uterus/Ovaries)

  • Conditions: Menstrual irregularities (heavy periods, amenorrhea), infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, postpartum recovery.

  • Benefits: Improves pelvic circulation, clears old blood and adhesions, and balances hormones, optimizing ovulation, endometrial health, and conception. Eases menstrual cramps and supports postpartum uterine involution.

  • Why: Ricinoleic acid’s anti-inflammatory and circulatory effects target pelvic stagnation, crucial for fertility and postpartum healing. Liver packing first ensures toxins mobilized from the pelvis are efficiently cleared.

Thyroid (Neck)

  • Conditions: Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, sluggish metabolism.

  • Benefits: Reduces thyroid inflammation, improves blood flow, and supports hormone production, enhancing energy and metabolic balance.

  • Why: The thyroid regulates hormones and metabolism, and castor oil’s penetration soothes autoimmune inflammation (e.g., Hashimoto’s), amplifying vitality after liver detox.

Joints (Knees, Shoulders, Hips)

  • Conditions: Arthritis (osteo or rheumatoid), joint pain, muscle soreness, injury recovery.

  • Benefits: Decreases inflammation, improves joint mobility, and promotes tissue repair, easing pain and stiffness.

  • Why: The oil’s analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties target localized joint issues, enhanced by systemic detox from liver packing, ensuring comprehensive relief.

Lower Back

  • Conditions: Chronic lower back pain, sciatica, menstrual-related backache, postpartum discomfort.

  • Benefits: Relieves tension, reduces inflammation, and enhances circulation, soothing pain and supporting spinal health.

  • Why: Castor oil’s deep penetration addresses localized inflammation and muscle strain, amplified by prior liver packing to clear systemic inflammatory cytokines.

Breasts

  • Conditions: Breast tenderness (PMS, hormonal), fibrocystic breasts, lymphatic congestion.

  • Benefits: Clears lymphatic stagnation, reduces tenderness, and supports breast tissue health, promoting comfort and balance.

  • Why: The oil’s lymphatic-stimulating properties alleviate congestion, especially effective after liver packing to enhance overall detox pathways.

How to Pack with Castor Oil

Materials Needed:

  • Cold-pressed, organic, hexane-free castor oil (~€15, herbolarios)

  • Unbleached cotton or wool flannel

  • Hot water bottle

  • Old towel or sheet to protect from leakage

Directions:

  1. Saturate the flannel with castor oil (3-4 tablespoons for the first application, less for subsequent uses).

  2. Apply 3-4 tablespoons of oil to the liver (right upper abdomen) or desired area, gently rubbing it into the skin.

  3. Cover with the soaked flannel, then an old towel, and place a hot water bottle on top.

  4. Rest for 60-90 minutes, ideally in the evening, to drop into a parasympathetic state. Read, meditate, or pray, allowing your body to rejuvenate. For deeper healing, leave on overnight.

  5. Store flannel in a glass jar for reuse (refresh oil every 3-4 uses). Once the pack is removed, any excess oil will simply be absorbed.

Why Castor Oil Packing Matters

Castor oil packing is more than a remedy—it’s a ritual of re-membering your body’s magic. Whether you’re nurturing fertility, healing postpartum, or easing chronic pain, this practice aligns with your cyclical wisdom, empowering you to thrive.
